CPO Boss Hogg Explains Getting Paid $37,000 For Tupac’s “Picture Me Rollin'”

CPO_Boss_Hogg_304

Exclusive: The Compton veteran says that Tupac did more for him than his years associated with N.W.A., Death Row Records and appearing on several multi-platinum releases.

[expand title=”More MBiz” tag=”h2″]

Twenty-two years before Kendrick Lamar and Top Dawg Entertainment inked a blockbuster deal with Interscope Records, CPO Boss Hogg was one of Compton, California’s first artists to reach a major label feat. WhileN.W.A.DJ Quik, and Compton’s Most Wanted were famously independent in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hub City’s King T and CPO (short for Capital Punishment Organization) were notably inked to a nearby landmark, Capitol Records.

CPO Boss Hogg Recalls MC Ren Signing Him For To Hell And Black

Speaking with HipHopDX this month, CPO (f/k/a Lil Nation) spoke about his unlikely transition from childhood friend of MC Ren, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E to one of Compton’s first artists with a nationally-distributed album. “I didn’t have any aspirations to rap or anything like that; I was really happy for [MC Ren],” CPO reflects on watching the success of 1988’s Straight Out Compton album by N.W.A. In the 18 months that followed though, the man picked up a pen and dabbled with the craft he heard coming from Ren, Eazy, Dre and Cube. “They were saying, ‘Let me hear something,’ and I said ‘No.'” Pressed further, CPO shared the “Ruthless Villain” his work. “Next thing I know, Ren was like, ‘You need to write nine more songs’.”

Those 10 songs would ultimately lead to what would be CPO’s first and only album, 1990’s To Hell And Black (released as a group with DJ Train and Young D, along with Lil Nation). Ren ushered his homies into Capitol Records, home of MC Hammer and The Beastie Boys, and secured a deal to his new production company. Ren produced much of the album, which hit #33 on the Rap charts, despite limited marketing and promotion. At the height of Compton hats and Locs, CPO was one of the artists to benefit from the city’s musical map-making. For CPO, it was all so sudden. “The next thing I know, [MC Ren] shot me a check. We just went from there and his [record] deal was with Capitol. It wasn’t even me; he opened the doors to walk through.”

Following the release of the album, the Boss Hogg made a brief appearance on the raunchy album cut, “Findum Fuckem, and Flee” on N.W.A.’s final LP, Niggaz4Life. With Ice Cube already gone from the group, and Ren soon becoming closer to Eazy-E than ever before, CPO’s fledgling career was in the balance. When Dr. Dre—whom he admits he never knew as well as Ren—mentioned a burgeoning new imprint called Death Row Records, CPO honored principles. “Understand this: I’m really about integrity and loyalty, so I’m happy with myself in the fact that I was loyal to [MC Ren]. I knew Dre too, but I was closer to Ren. When I say how pissed off I was that I didn’t take initiative to take that spot then—I could have very likely been on [Dr. Dre’s] The Chronic, I was hella hot. When the opportunity came to go again, I shook.” Although not on the original 1992 release of the album, CPO Boss Hogg was very present during those early 1990s sessions at Dick Griffey’s Solaar Studios. The rapper had strong ties to Chocolate, who was Death Row CEO Marion “Suge” Knight’s first client, the man who allegedly (and rather notoriously) wrote Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” hit. When the new ownership of Death Row re-released  The Chronic as “Re-Lit & From The Vault” in 2009, a CPO song, “Slippin’ In The West” was included.

CPO Boss Hogg Explains Pro’s & Con’s Of Signing To Death Row Records

However, it was two years later that chance encounters with Dre and Suge—another native of Compton—led Boss Hogg to inking his second record contract. After running into Dre at the producer’s regular hang-out of the day, Gladstone’s restaurant in Malibu, the two discusses a potential collaboration. While Dre told CPO he was too occupied to produce a track, he introduced his friend from the Ruthless Records years to Snoop Doggy Dogg’s latest deejay, DJ Jam and producer Tony Green. The result was “Just So Ya No” on Above The Rim soundtrack, followed by “The Eulogy” on theMurder Was The Case soundtrack, both twice-platinum each. “When I got on Above The Rim, that was a flick,” proudly recalls CPO of the Barry Michael Cooper-penned script-turned-blockbuster. “You know rolling up to the theater and walking on the red carpet. That has never happened to me with my album and you know I’m with the top dogs in the industry. To be on Above The Rim and to turn around and be on Murder Was The Case is huge.”

It was an actor in both films, Tupac Shakur, that would ultimately give CPO Boss Hogg has greatest sense of worth in a lengthy career. The pair had met in 1992, just days after the film Juice hit theaters. “We were sitting in a room and we were way in front of this ballroom,” recalls CPO, referring to he and his manager at a B.R.E. magazine event in Los Angeles, California. “It was dimly lit and we saw the door open up way at the other end. You could easily see from the hall light, that it was [Tupac]. He started walking in our direction, and we looked at each other and said, ;Does it look like he is walking towards us?’ So we moved to the left and when we moved he moved, he kept walking. Then we moved to the right and then he moved. I was like, ‘Aw, Hell nah.’ The he walked right up to us. Of course I knew who he was, but there is no way in the world Tupac knew who the hell CPO is. Wrong. He walked up and said what’s up. I said, ‘Congratulations on Juice,‘ and he was like, ‘Cool, I appreciate it.’ We shook hands, a couple of hellos and then he went off.”

After CPO had signed to Death Row, the two crossed paths one day at the label’s studios. In 1994, while Tupac was hanging out with Snoop, Tha Dogg Pound and Nate Dogg, CPO passed through. “They were all sitting at the board. ‘Pac got up and walked over to me and hugged me,” recalls CPO. “He just walks over and gives me hospitable love. We don’t know each other like that; he has only met me one other time. So I thought that was super-cool. This is a humble cat, he is just really cool. He went back to what he was doing, but that had meant a lot to me. This dude doesn’t know me from Adam other than one other time we met for moments.”

CPO Discusses The Love Tupac Showed Him On “Picture Me Rollin'”

As the ’90s pressed on, Death Row Records expanded greatly. The label roster would boast artists such as R&B crooner Danny Boy, producer/emcee Sam Sneed, and eventually CPO’s former label-mate MC Hammer, along with Hit Squad member K-Solo. As the roster widened, CPO’s label correspondence and his paychecks halted. The rapper would take a job in reception at Martin Luther King Medical Center in L.A. to support his family. Several years removed from his multi-platinum soundtrack appearances, CPO learned that he was about to lose his day-job too. “I was really depressed because I knew I was going to get laid off. I was sitting there thinking to myself, I’m signed to Death Row [Records], the biggest record company out here and nothing is going on with me. I’m not doing videos,” recalled the rapper. Drinking away the pain with his friends in Compton, CPO admitted, “I just wanted to talk to somebody, anybody who is doing something, so I can feel like even if I’m not doing shit, I can talk to somebody who is. So I called the studio and [Death Row Records employee] Travis answered the phone and he said, ‘What’s up CPO?’ I said, ‘Who is in today?’ and he said. ”Pac,’ and I said ”Pac…Tupac?.'” CPO, like many, was shocked to learn that the incarcerated rapper was now not only a free man, but the latest acquisition on the Row roster. The session was following Tupac’s bail from Clinton Correctional Facility, orchestrated by Suge Knight and label lawyer David Kenner. CPO requested to speak to his friendly acquaintance.

“He put me on hold and when the phone picks up I can hear it’s ‘Pac’s voice. I said, ‘What’s up Pac?’ and he said, ‘What’s up, who is this?’ I said, ‘CPO.’ He said, ‘What’s up, CPO.’ I said, ‘I had a vision,’ and he said, ‘What was it?’ I said, ‘To do a song with Tupac.’ He said should I do a song with you, do one with me. I said, ‘Cool, we got to do that one day.’ He said, ‘Nigga, I’m here now.’ I was like, ‘Okay.” And I hung the phone up. Then me and the homies went to the studio.”

When CPO and his friends arrived at Tarzana, California Can-Am Studios, they found Tupac Shakur and his Outlawz entrenched in a studio session with late producer Johnny J. Death Row provided the session with extensive liquor and marijuana, which CPO indulged. “We sit down and he sits down smoking about a thousand cigarettes back-to-back,” recalled CPO. “He is doing his thing and I start writing in my pad. So I get to this one part and I’m so blazed out of my head and I can’t think of anything right here. So I walked to him and said, ‘Listen, I’m going to say this and I want you to come in and say something, and then I’m going to come in after you. I don’t care what it is. ‘Cause I’m stuck right here.'”

He continued, “So we laid it and everything. We sat there and listened to it. He dropped the music on my part which I thought that was interesting. I was like, ‘That’s kind of cool, accenting my voice and everything.’ [My friends] asked if we’re going to use this song and I knew damn well they’re not going to use this shit. I was [thinking], ‘Isn’t this nice that they are doing all this for the fat guy?’ My boys were like, ‘Did you realize you just did a song with Tupac.’ I said, ‘Let me explain something to you, he is not going to use that song.’ The thing is what you do is you go in, you do a whole lot of songs and then you choose from the songs that you like, and then you put those on the album.” In 17-plus years of hindsight, CPO laughs. “Little did I know that every fucking song he was doing, he was going to use all of them.” There were a lot of things that surprised CPO of that day. “I didn’t know he was doing a 2CD thing. When [All Eyez On Me] came out, I didn’t think twice about it because for me that cat made my day just by inviting me to kick it at the session.

Nothing would surprised CPO more than we he took a closer look at Tupac’s best-selling studio album. His longtime manager, Michelle, was an employee at the label. She called him shortly before February 13, 1996 to tell him that the session, to be known as “Picture Me Rollin’,” resulted in the seventh song of the double-album’s second disc. Produced by Johnny J, the song also featured Danny Boy and Thug Life/The Outlawz’ Big Syke (l/k/a Mussolini). Cynical from half a decade of disenchantment in the music industry, at the time, CPO thought, “I’m not bullshitting when I tell you that I did not think anybody would like the song. There were too many other songs on there, you got songs with Dre, and you got songs with Snoop [Dogg]. There was too much bomb shit on there, why would they even hear this? But they did.” Although not a single, “Picture Me Rollin'” became a fan favorite, and a song epitomizing Tupac’s post-jail mindframe in the final year of the thug angel’s life.

For CPO Boss Hogg though, the story does not end there. While “Picture Me Rollin'” and its position on the five-times-platinum All Eyez concluded his Death Row Records catalog of appearances, the Compton vet appeared on albums such as The Eastidaz’ platinum self-titled debut, and the Bones soundtrack, two opportunities afforded by Snoop. However, although he was paid by his former label-mate, he still was on hard times at the turn of the millenium. “In 2000, I don’t know what the hell happened to my finances, but I was super-broke,” CPO admits. “I had left my job because I got hurt on the job. They were supposed to pay me workers [compensation], but it hadn’t come through.” While Suge Knight, CPO’s Compton homie was still incarcerated from a parole violation the night of Tupac’s fatal shooting, the rapper contacted his former label, who was approaching arrears after parting ways with Interscope Records’ distribution channel. “I was so fuckin’ broke that I decided to do the unthinkable, and call Death Row. I knew I was going to be told ‘hell no,’ but I decided to call Death Row and say, ‘I want to talk to somebody about the song I did with Tupac.'”

A Death Row employee instructed CPO to contact Universal Publishing, after Afeni Shakur severed ties with Death Row following Tupac’s 1996 death. CPO thought he might be getting the run-around from a label that had subsequently caused Snoop, Nate Dogg, and Kurupt to leave. “I called Universal,” Boss Hogg says, adding that his call was transferred through a number of departments. Finally, somebody asked his name and the song in question. “She said, ‘Well, we are only paying mechanicals,’ and I said, ‘Exactly what’s mechanicals?’  and she said, ‘It means you actually wrote something.'” Confirming he did in fact write, CPO said he was told he would receive a check in two weeks. After his tenures at Capitol and Death Row, the rapper admitted, “I knew there wasn’t no check coming.”

He was wrong. Although it took nearly three weeks, the low-funded CPO Boss Hogg checked his mailbox. “I got a letter in the mail from Universal, it looked like a check. I’m sitting there thinking what if it’s $1,500 that would be the shit right now—and then I’m thinking what if it’s $5,000,” recalls the artist. “Then I’m like, ‘Chill cuzz, it’s not $5,000, open the check and be happy with what you get.’ I open the check and it was a little over $37,000, and I was like “Whoa, I’m rich, bitch!”

“I still get paid for that song to this day,” CPO admits, emotionally. “Fate, that’s all I can say about how that came together.” In a career that’s included close ties to N.W.A., Snoop Dogg and Suge Knight, CPO touts, “‘Pac did more for me than anybody else.”

Later this year, CPO intends to release his sophomore album, 23 years after the debut. I Boss, planned for late summer release, will include production from another Death Row Records alum, Sean “Barney Rubble” Thomas, who in addition to work with Warren G, J-Flexx and The Lady Of Rage, played keyboards on All Eyez’ biggest hit, “California Love.” Dave Aaron, who engineered many a hit for the label, has also returned to Rap, to see CPO Boss Hogg’s second LP through. Also involved is CPO’s brother, Bokie Loc, who has worked with South Central Cartel, Goldie Loc and Snoop Dogg on Malice N’ Wonderland.

“ATTENTION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & Beware of this woman Karen Monroe !!!!!! Her Instagram is @iwantkaykay & I have blocked her from all three of my children’s IG accounts !!!! She was my children’s sitter up until last year & FIRED for being caught, lying, stealing, screaming at my kids, mistreating others kids & doing very inappropriate & unbecoming things of a baby sitter… she was fired by me for those things & after she was BUSTED having sex with her then boyfriend & leaving a used condom & the wrapper in my daughters room !!!!”

Billboard Not Counting Jay-Z’s 1m Samsung Downloads

jay-z-special-announcement

Jay-Z’s Samsung deal had tongues wagging in anticipation for his new studio album “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” 1 million Samsung users could download the album for free days before it’s July 4th release.

[expand title=”More MBiz” tag=”h2″]

Now, the music magazine Billboard, which is the industry standard for charts and sales, is saying “nice try.” None of the 1 millions downloads will be counted towards his total sales.

The magazine’s editorial director, Bill Werde, said Billboard rejected Jay Z’s request that the Samsung promotional sales be counted toward the Billboard 200 chart because “in the context of this promotion, nothing is actually for sale.”

“The ever-visionary Jay Z pulled the nifty coup of getting paid as if he had a platinum album before one fan bought a single copy,” Werde said.

Werde said Jay Z should earn his 13th No. 1 album anyway, as “Magna Carta Holy Grail” is forecast to sell between 400,000 and 450,000 units in its first week. [source]

[expand title=”More MBiz” tag=”h2″]

No Limit rapper Fiend has always been known as one to speak his mind. Sometimes, interviews regarding certain artists coming from their peers reveal more information than actually talking to the specific artist.

In a recent interview with Prezident Bejda of the Murder Master Music Show on UGS Radio, Fiend talked about a myriad of topics including his relationship with No Limit founder Master P.

Fiend says he believes Master P’s negativity toward him is uncalled for and doesn’t understand it.

“This dude is out there some where still talking negative about me,” Fiend said. “I wanna go on record bro, I never bashed Master P a day in my life on an interview. I never sued him for rightful payment of things that I worked for or nothing, but I feel from time to time I catch a little negativity.”

The No Limit signee also spoke on a shooting incident while overseas during a Snoop Doggperformance.

“We had so much love for Snoop,” he said. “While he was performing someone shot a pistol and Me, C-Murder, Mac, Kane and Abel, and Magic jumped off the stage looking for a man with a gun when we ain’t have a box of popcorn to throw at this dude.”

Finally, another story emerged during the interview when Fiend claimed that he was a victim of racism in Germany.

“I was in Germany and I had to be locked up in the back of a bus because they are not into letting people of color into certain areas,” Fiend explained. “We had to be locked up in the back of the bus and be quiet.”

Kanye West & Kim Kardashian’s Daughter’s Name Reportedly Revealed, NORTH WEST

kim-kardashian-kanye-west

UPDATE #2: Almost a week after Kanye West and Kim Kardashian welcomed their daughter to the world, TMZ has sources who have seen the baby’s birth certificate at the hospital.

[expand title=”More MBiz” tag=”h2″]

It has been a busy first-half of June for Kanye West. Less than one week before his sixth solo album, Yeezus, will hit stores on June 18, West and girlfriend Kim Kardashian now welcomed their first child, a baby girl this morning (June 15).

Us Weekly reports that Kardashian gave birth in the last 24 hours, accompanied by West at Los Angeles, California’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The baby was expected in the first half of July, but was delivered nearly one month early. “[The baby girl’s birth] five weeks early. Kim got sick last night and had the baby early,” a source told the celebrity magazine. Usalso reported that both the newborn baby and her mother are healthy after the delivery. The baby’s name has also not been released to the public.

Kanye West, who was in New York earlier in the week, was in California when Kim went into labor. The superstar emcee/producer was expected at L.A.’s Milk Hangar last night (June 14) for a Yeezuslistening event and party. However, West did not attend, after apparently accompanying Kardashian to the hospital.

Earlier this month, HipHopDX reported on the gender of the baby, which was unveiled courtesy of E!’sKeeping Up With Kardashians reality television show. The couple announced Kim’s pregancy during a 2012 New Years Eve celebration in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Last month, a source claiming to be close to the couple revealed to media that they intend to bring the baby on Kanye West’s upcoming tour.

HipHopDX would like to send our congratulations to the families of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

(June 15)

UPDATE: E! News reports that the baby was born naturally, and weighed less than five pounds at delivery. A source hinted that the girl’s name, when announced to the public, likely starts with a K—a tradition in the Kardashian family, and also true of her father. The source also noted, “[The baby] has dark hair. She looks just like Kim [Kardashian].”

(June 16)

UPDATE #2: TMZ.com is reporting that the first child of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s name is North West. Although the couple is not married, the celebrity news and gossip site reports that the couple’s daughter, who will turn one week old in the next day, has taken her father’s last name according to a birth certificate seen at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

This may hint towards the couple’s plans to marry, though it is unclear at this time. Neither Kim nor Kanye have confirmed their daughter’s name since last Saturday.

Details of the homicide were still sketchy at press time, but the Louisiana native’s manager, Leem7st, confirmed the reports with a cryptic tweet early Thursday morning (June 20), expressing shock following a call he’d received that his client had died. “The call I got this morning is un real RIP 2 my Lil n—a lilsnupe,” Leem7st tweeted.

Remembering Lil Snupe: Meek Mill Introduces Us To His Protégé Back In April

The R.N.I.C. MC passed his demo to Meek during a Louisiana tour stop in 2012, and he was signed to the MMG rapper’s label in less than an hour. “He was in a van, they was finna pull off. And I went and knocked on the van, on the window. They let the window down, grabbed the mixtape and it was like 10 minutes later, 20 minutes later they called me,” Snupe told MTV News back in February during NBA All-Star Weekend.

Meek was drawn to the young spitter’s talent on the spot and wanted to cultivate it. “He was spittin’ so much pain, he’s from the south with a flow like an east coast guy,” Meek said. “Like with that bounce flow, all over the place, he really can spit, and he was talking that talk that I can really relate to. I seen potential in him.”

D. Bradford, the contact agent on Lil Snupe’s Twitter page, had not responded to MTV News by press time. This story is developing.

Jay-Z might not be able to represent NBA players until he sells his stake in the Brooklyn Nets, though.

Jay-Z is now licensed to be an NBA and MLB agent, according to multiple reports. Hov may not be able to sign any NBA players to his Roc Nation Sports agency immediately, though, because as of yesterday (June 19) he has yet to sell his minority stake in the NBA franchise the Brooklyn Nets, according to reports.

As HipHopDX reported earlier this month, NBA rules prohibit an individual from owning a piece of a team and representing a player. Yet if Jigga’s firm handles only marketing opportunities for Durant, Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports might not be in violation of NBA rules that prohibit an individual from owning a piece of a team and representing a player, ESPN says.

Kevin Durant told people in his inner circle earlier this month that he planned to sign with Roc Nation Sports, though the Oklahoma City Thunder forward has not commented publicly on his plans to sign with new representation.

MLB Players Association spokesman Greg Bouris said that Jay-Z is also now licensed as an MLB agent, according to ESPN.comRoc Nation Sports signed New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano in April, but had to partner with Creative Artists Agency to negotiate Cano’s contract because, at the time, Roc Nation Sports did not have an MLB agent in house.

Even though Roc Nation Sports has signed New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, Jay-Z is not a certified agent with the NFL. Yesterday (June 19), the NFL Players Association met with Kim Miale, Roc Nation Sports’ NFL agent, about the extent to which Jay-Z was involved in signing Smith, according to ESPN.com. Smith posted a picture of himself with Jay-Z on Instagram during his agent recruitment process and an NFL rule prohibits agents from having colleagues or friends who aren’t NFLPA-certified agents present for recruiting meetings. The outcome of the meeting has yet to be made public.

Beyond his work as a sports agent, Jay-Z will also be releasing his Magna Carta Holy Grail album July 4. He announced the project Sunday (June 16) during halftime of Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
